An innovative land-based United States aquaponics facility landed its first retail account on 4 July.  De Pere, Wisconsin-based Festival Foods, which operates 28 stores, began selling Superior Fresh’s farmed salmon in all its stores in time for the United State’s Independence Day holiday.

Superior Fresh, a Hixton, Wisconsin-based aquaculture firm, boasts antibiotic-free, hormone-free salmon that utilizes Wisconsin groundwater in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS).  “We are excited to offer such a fresh product to people right here in the Midwest,” Superior Fresh said on its Facebook page.

Because it is based in the Midwest, Superior can also deliver salmon to stores within 48 hours post-harvest, according to the company’s website.  Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program rates Superior Fresh’s salmon a “Best Choice,” according to the supplier. Other advantages touted by the land-based salmon include high omega-3 counts, according to Superior.

“Our salmon contain some of the highest Omega 3s, compared to even wild-caught fish,” Superior claimed on its Facebook page.  In addition, the fish’s organic diet is specially formulated for its fish. “The food we give to our fish is all-natural, non-GMO, and contains naturally derived pigment,” the company said on its Facebook page.  The aquaponics supplier also delivers leafy greens to stores within 48 hours of harvest.
